Green Building for the Future

Our future is important and it rests upon our ability to be environmentally responsible.  This is why it is necessary to use resources that can be renewed over and over again.  It also means using materials that are not harmful to the environment, seeking out alternatives that are biodegradable and safe for both people and the world they return to.  Green building is a big way to keep the environment healthy – and we are able to obtain excellent buildings out of the process.

If you are looking to buy something for your home – such as doors or flooring – or hoping to build an entire house or business from the ground up, then you can choose from materials that are renewable.  You will find that wood is actually an excellent resource.  The concerns in the past are beginning to fade as we discover ways to obtain wood from the environment more responsibly.  This means choosing older trees that may already be dead or dying, reclaiming wood straight from older buildings that are no longer in use, and planting more trees in order to replace those we have taken.  A good company will be very open and frank with you about their green practices.  Look for a company that uses environmentally friendly materials in their manufacturing processes as well as companies that understand sustainability.  For example, the company may work only with sustainable forests in which not one, but two trees are often planted for every one tree that is harvested.

As you install your door, moulding, or flooring, or build your new location, you can feel more at ease knowing the wood and materials came from eco-friendly suppliers and companies.  If you have a LEED project, talk to the company about what resources and materials they can offer that will help you earn points.  This can include recycled content of varying percentages such as reclaimed wood, regional materials, rapidly renewable materials, certified wood, and low-emitting materials.  All of these can help get you credit.  If you need the proper paperwork or assistance, the company providing the materials should be happy to help.

Creating a building or installing materials that come from sustainable locations or made with recycled content can mean a huge difference even if it does not seem like much.  Every person who uses green building concepts and materials quickly adds up into the bigger picture.  Years from now, those effects can be seen even as your home or business still boasts about how it was able to make a difference.
