One of Sun Mountain’s custom door design options is arched rails, including arched lock and mid-door rails. (Rails are the door’s horizontal members.) Sun Mountain offers three “standard” arched rail styles: flat arch, cathedral arch, and circle arch rails.
Arched rails provide near endless design opportunities, especially when used in multiples or combined with mullions (the vertical members that separate the door’s panels) or muntins (the vertical members that separate the door’s glass panes, or “lites”).
Above are two examples of circle lock rail doors. The knotty Alder 2-lite door with flat arch top on the left features an oversized circle lock rail. It is finished in a Sun Mountain custom factory pre-finish, and antiqued with a heavy distress. It graces the entry of a home in Santa Rosa, CA. The door on the right is a variation on the traditional circle lock rail–a “keyhole” circle rail. Also made of knotty Alder, this door with true arch top is part of an entry unit in Steamboat Springs, CO.
And when arched rails are used in a double door configuration, the rails can be constructed to span the width of the pair. The door at left demonstrates this, with a single cathedral rail on this pair of lightly distressed knotty Alder 1-panel, 1-lite doors. Here the cathedral arch spans both doors, creating a lovely entry into a South Carolina home.
