The Mediterranean architectural motif includes Old World-style homes from coastal Mediterranean Europe and Tuscan designs that are refined recreations of Italian villas, first introduced in England in the 1840s. These homes are reminiscent of ancient castles, exuding a sense of luxury—inside and out. The exteriors of these large multi-story homes are faced with stucco or stone and often incorporate classic elements such as turret towers, tile or terra cotta roofs with multiple intersecting roof lines and gables, and beautiful arched doorways and windows. Windows are tall and narrow, with wooden shutters. Tuscan homes often have an enclosed courtyard. Mediterranean-style interiors feature an open floor plan, with accents of stone, tile and wrought iron, wooden beams, and wide plank hardwood flooring.
