Glass Options for Doors

Doors featuring glass panels are referred to as “lited doors,” with each individual pane of glass called a “lite.” Sun Mountain offers a wide selection of standard glass styles and can also source custom options upon request. All glass, whether used in interior and exterior doors, is tempered for safety and code compliance. In cases where decorative glass cannot be tempered, it’s sealed between two panes of clear tempered glass, preserving the design while meeting safety standards.

For interior doors, we typically use ¼” thick single-pane glass (“single glaze” or SG). Exterior doors generally use ½” or ⅝” thick insulated glass (IG), composed of two or three hermetically sealed panes separated by dry airspace. This enhances energy efficiency, reduces heating and cooling costs, and prevents condensation in colder climates. For even greater thermal performance, “Low-E” (low emissivity) glass is available.

For highly customized designs, such as stained glass or artisan glass, Sun Mountain can manufacture doors to be “open for glass,” allowing on-site installation. We can build the door to fit a provided glass panel, or supply exact dimensions to accommodate your custom design.
