Distressed Wood
Sun Mountain transforms new wood into timeless, character-rich pieces through expert distressing techniques. Using traditional Old World tools, our artisans hand-apply wear and texture that evokes the look and feel of antique wood. Especially striking on knotty species, distressing is enhanced by pre-finished glazes that deepen warmth and individuality.

Doors

Light Distress
Light distress is characterized by:
- Scratches
- Lightly broken edges
- Surface dents and dings

Medium Distress
Medium distress includes all Light distress features, plus:
- Heavily broken edges on panels and sticking
- Worm holes
- Long cracks
- Planer chatter around knots

Antique Distress (Plank Doors Only)
Antique distress applies only to plank (“V-groove”) doors and includes all Medium distress features, with:
- Tear-out and broken edges on V-grooves

Heavy Distress
Heavy distress builds on Medium distress, adding:
- Heavily planed and sanded surface finish
- Additional worm holes
- Random gouges

Wire Brushed Distress
Wire brushing creates a naturally weathered texture by removing soft summerwood fibers, revealing the harder grain beneath. The result is a subtly aged surface with fine, linear brush marks..
- Best suited for soft woods like Pine or Cedar
(may create a slightly “fuzzy” texture) - Not ideal for very dense hardwoods like Hickory or Mahogany
- Applied before door assembly, which may result in up to 1/16” variation in the face plane between stile and rails
- Applied only to flat surfaces, excluding sticking, panel profiles, and applied mouldings
Additional Distressing Options
- Light and Wire Brushed distressing available for door jambs and wood mouldings
- Light, Medium, Heavy, and Wire Brushed options available for wood beams
