Doors can open and close in a variety of ways, and one unique function growing in popularity is the “pivot” door—generally used on entry doors. These doors operate on a special pivot hinge, with pins that attach at the top and bottom of the door, installed several inches from the door edge. This application allows for a unique and eye-catching swinging function. In addition, pivot hinges can support much wider and heavier doors than traditional pin and barrel hinges. Sun Mountain distributes pivot hinges from leading suppliers such as Rixson (model 117-3/4. shown below left) and Dorma (model CP1000, below right), and also “machines” the door slabs and jambs for pivot hinges as specified.
Sun Mountain manufactured this spectacular flush pivot door for a discerning customer in Palo Alto, California. This custom-designed entry door (door design SQ-0000-F179) is 4′ wide x 9′ high x 2-1/4″ thick, and is made of select Walnut wood, finished with Sun Mountain’s Hope Mountain glaze exterior finish. The door includes a metal inlay running the full height of the door, with a built-in pull handle. The metal is finished with a powder-coat metallic oil-rubbed bronze color. This entry unit also includes a custom-made sidelite with Satin insulated glass (not shown). Sun Mountain provided the pivot hinge hardware and completed machining of the door slab for the hinge. The pre-hung, pre-finished unit is ready for installation upon arrival at the jobsite.
