Cedar wood is a softwood (with Janka Hardness at just 600*) with a tight grain pattern similar to Mahogany. Sun Mountain offers a type of Cedar called “Pin-Knot Spanish Cedar.” Traditionally used in humidors, it is prized for its resistance to insect attacks and rot, and is an excellent choice for exterior doors. Color varies slightly from reddish-brown to light pink. Knots tend to be small and pin-like (as the name implies), and larger dark brown or black pitch marks and streaks are also common.
*Hardness, per the Janka Hardness Test, which measures the resistance of a type of wood to withstand denting and wear. It measures the force, in pounds, required to embed a 0.444″ diameter steel ball into wood to half the ball’s diameter.
