DOORS
For generations our craftsmen have created the finest quality, most beautiful doors for both interior and exterior applications. Sun Mountain Doors are made in the U.S.A. Our lumber is sourced only from responsibly managed forests. FSC Certification is available upon request.
Engineered Stiles & Rails
Stiles and rails are the vertical and horizontal "frame" components respectively of the door. Our stiles and rails are engineered to resist bowing and warping. We use industry leading 1/8" thick veneers, with superior quality LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) or LSL (TimberStrand®, Laminated Strand Lumber) core material. For example, our LVL core is manufactured with a vertical layup, with laminated layers positioned at a 90° angle to the veneer surface for maximum stability.
Engineered Stiles & Rails
On exterior doors, kick rails are solid wood to eliminate moisture penetration and delamination of veneers.
Stave Core Stiles & Rails
Upon request, Sun Mountain also offers engineered stiles and rails manufactured with Stave core. Stave core is made with lower grade lumber components, cut to size and face-glued together. Grain patterns are alternated to balance the core and reduce the natural tendency of the wood to warp.
Solid Panels
Panels are the large, wider boards used to fill the space between the stiles and rails. Our panels are solid wood—much higher quality than pressboard panels with thin veneers, or hollow core panels. Our panels are manufactured with small width boards, edge glued to create the larger width panel. Boards are typically random width, but can be similar width upon request. Grain patterns are alternated to balance the panel and reduce the natural tendency of the wood to warp or cup.
All panels equal to or greater than 1-3/4" thick are manufactured as two piece panels which are face glued together. This superior design significantly reduces warping and cracking of the panel.
Panels typically fit into grooves in the frame components, and "float" on rubber spacers to allow for minor expansion and shrinking of the wood with the natural moisture and environmental changes of the home.
Bore & Dowel Construction
Bore & Dowel Construction
Sun Mountain doors are assembled with bore and dowel construction. We use industry leading 1/2" diameter dowels. Stiles and rails are bored, glued and then doweled for optimum strength and stability. Panels typically fit into grooves in the stile and rail components, and "float" on rubber spacers to allow for minor expansion and shrinking of the wood with the natural moisture and environmental changes of the home.
Panel & Sticking Profiles
Sun Mountain manufactures a variety of panel profiles and denotes these numerically including:
- Number 1 = Flat Panel, 3/4" Thick
- Number 1E = Flat Panel, 1-1/4" Thick
- Number 2 = Flat Panel w/V-Grooves, 3/4" Thick
- Number 4 = Raised Panel w/Narrow Convex Hip, 1" Thick
- Number 5 = Raised Panel w/Wide Convex Hip, 1-3/4" Thick
- Number 6 = Raised Panel w/Narrow Concave Hip, 1-1/2" Thick
- Number 7 = Flat Panel w/V-Grooves, 1-1/2" Thick
- Number 8 = Flat Panel w/V-Grooves, 1-3/4" Thick
"Sticking" is the decorative trim wood placed between the stiles and rails and the panels of the door. Sun Mountain offers a variety of Sticking profiles to meet every need, and denotes these alphabetically including:
- A Sticking = Flat
- B Sticking = Bevel
- C Sticking = Curved, Concave and Convex
- O Sticking = Ogee, Convex
- Teton Sticking = Teton Bevel
Our most popular panel and sticking profiles can be viewed under the Design Options menu, Door Panel & Sticking Profiles.
Applied Moulding
Decorative Applied Moulding can be added to the door to create a unique design. Applied Moulding is an optional decorative trim attached where the panels meet the stiles and rails (the vertical and horizontal frames of the door respectively), or to create a decorative pattern on the door. Sun Mountain manufactures over 30 Applied Moulding profiles and denotes these numerically preceded by "SM", i.e. SM4, SM47, SM58, etc.
Our most popular Applied Moulding profiles can be viewed under the Design Options menu, Door Panel & Sticking Profiles.

We also offer patterned frosted pantry, laundry and wine cellar panes, and custom etched or leaded glass options.
All glass options can be viewed under the Design Options menu, Glass.
Antique Wood
Sun Mountain can "distress" new wood to give it a natural, antique look and feel. Our skilled artisans do this by hand, using a variety of old world tools. Distressing is particularly dramatic on our rustic (knotty) wood species, and our pre-finished glaze options beautifully highlight the warmth and character of the antiqued wood. Details on our distressed wood options can be found under the Design Options menu, Antique Wood.
Door Jambs
Sun Mountain offers the value-added option of purchasing pre-hung doors, ready to install in the door opening. Our frames, called "door jambs", are manufactured from solid wood and are available in widths, thicknesses and styles to meet all needs. Details on our door jamb options can be found under the Design Options menu, Door Jambs.
Door Warranty
Sun Mountain offers an industry leading Door Warranty.
MOULDINGS
Sun Mountain manufactures a variety of solid wood Mouldings, all made in the U.S.A. Base, case, crown, pediment and tongue and groove Mouldings are available, in your choice of wood species and in numerous profile options. Depending upon the wood species, narrow width Mouldings, up to 5-1/4" wide, are normally manufactured from solid boards (no glue lines). Wider width Mouldings, greater than 5-1/4" wide, are normally manufactured from smaller boards, edge glued to create the wider requirements. More information regarding our Mouldings can be found under the Mouldings menu.
FLOORING
Sun Mountain Wide Plank Hardwood Floors are made in the U.S.A. We offer both solid wood and engineered flooring. Our lumber is sourced only from responsibly managed forests. FSC Certification is available upon request. Sun Mountain is a proud member of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA).
Solid Wood Flooring
Sun Mountain's solid wood flooring is recommended for at or above grade applications only. Solid wood floors are not recommended for "direct glue to concrete" or radiant heat sub-floor applications. Standard features of our solid wood products include:
- 3/4" thickness
- End-matched tongue and groove
- Widths up to 8" (on selected species)
Engineered Flooring
Sun Mountain's engineered flooring is strongly recommended for below grade applications (i.e. high moisture content in basements). Engineered floors are also strongly recommended for "direct glue to concrete" applications and installations over radiant heat sub-floors. Advantages of our engineered flooring include less shrink and expansion related to moisture than solid wood—reducing warping, cupping and cracking, and widths greater than 8" (up to 12" on selected species). Standard features of our engineered products include:
- 15mm thick (approximately 9/16") core material—11-ply alternating grain laminate material, glued with Exterior Grade, Class 3 glue
- 4mm thick (>1/8") wear layer veneer (can be sanded and refinished twice)
- Two-piece material (core, plus wear layer veneer) approximately 3/4" thick, on all widths from 3" to 8"
- Three-piece material (core, plus wear layer veneer, plus mill-option bottom veneer) approximately 7/8" thick, on all widths greater than 8"
- Core and veneer construction tested by submersion in water for 48 hours, with no delamination!
- End-matched tongue and groove
- Widths up to 12" (on selected species)
