glass
Sun Mountain offers over 30 glass designs for our door applications, and we can source additional custom glass styles at your request. All of our door glass, for both interior and exterior applications, is tempered for both safety and building code compliance. In some cases the most decorative glass styles cannot be tempered. With these styles of glass, we sandwich the decorative glass between two panes of clear tempered glass—thereby achieving both the desired design and the required safety and building code compliance.
Doors with glass are commonly referred to as “lited doors” and individual panes of glass are called “lites”. Interior doors are normally made with 1/4” thick “SG” (Single Glaze, meaning single pane) glass. Exterior doors generally use “IG”, or Insulated Glass, with two or three panes hermetically sealed and separated by dry airspace. IG reduces heat transfer through the glass, significantly reducing heating and air conditioning costs. IG also reduces interior condensation in cold climates. Thermal performance can be further improved with “Low-E” (or low emissivity) glass.
If you are sourcing custom glass, such as stained glass or any other one-of-a-kind glass, Sun Mountain can build your door “open for glass”, meaning ready for insertion of your custom glass. We can design and size the door to fit your glass, or provide your artist or other glass source the dimensions to fit your chosen door.
